Chapter Seventeen
Molly
The day seemed to be dragging forever. I kept looking at the time, wishing it would move so we could end the school day. I needed to get home. I needed to know if Clove and Ken were okay. They had come to my classroom to reassure me that they were, but maybe they were hiding something from me. Maybe Clove was expelled.
Iâd avoided the bathrooms all day because I didnât want to read the messages written about me. But I couldnât hold it any longer. Even the short ride home would be too long to wait. So I mustered up the courage and turned toward the girlsâ bathroom.
It was more packed than I had expected it to be. A shudder went through me at the thought of dealing with Shelly and her gang, but I told myself I was over them.
They didnât seem to be here, though, but many other girls were. Each kept looking at me with smirks on their faces. I pushed past them and went into a stall. There were words written all over and I usually never paid attention to them. But now I did.
There were a few lines about me, all saying the same thing in different formats. That I liked older men. That I was a slut, a skank, a whore.
I tore my eyes away, pretending they didnât exist. That none of it existed. Who were these other messages about? Girls who had graduated years ago? Girls who still went here? Why didnât anyone paint over it? It was as if the faculty didnât care about it.
I wondered if those girls had moved on to bigger, greater things. High school was just four yearsâof hell sometimes. Then it was over and we were free to live our lives the way we wanted. The scars would still be there. Even the digital evidence in my case, but hopefully I would get over it. Iâd make sure to get over it. And Iâd also make sure not to let the guys get in trouble because of me. Sweet as it was, it ended today.
I met Bernie and Sid in the hallway, where they were waiting for me at my locker. Sid sighed in relief. âGood, youâre here. We were starting to get worried.â
Bernie nodded vehemently. âThe last we heard was Ken and Clove being called to the vice principalâs office. And then we couldnât find you.â He smiled. âBut Iâm glad youâre okay.â
âI wonder what happened,â Sid added. âThe whole schoolâs been talking about it.â
It was true. That was why everyone was staring at me in the hallway or wherever I went. Not only because of the pictures, but because they thought Clove got expelled defending my honor. I had no idea how they knew it was because of me, but I shouldnât have been surprised. I was sure Shelly had something to do with it.
Bernieâs brown eyes were wide. âIs it true? Was he really expelled? But what happened to Ken, then?â
I grabbed my backpack from my locker and hoisted the strap over my shoulder.
